John Winthrop Elementary School
Principal's Vision
“The Winthrop offers a wide array of enrichment activities after school, and its students have a record of achievement through these activities. Yet while there are many enrichment offerings, there is no central organizing function for them. The Winthrop hopes that PSS will help bring cohesion to what has been a fragmented system around enrichment.”
Overview
The Winthrop has a strong desire to go beyond the work done during the school day. The school recognizes a need to provide its students with numerous, diverse and high-quality opportunities for experiential learning, particularly those involving oral language skill development.
The Winthrop has offered an after-school program and enrichment clubs, evening events for parents, and weekend field trips. It has been very successful at parent engagement. However, it has not had the capacity to ensure that programs and services meet the demand and are high-quality, well-coordinated, and aligned with the school day.
PSS is supporting the Winthrop in its efforts to achieve all of these goals. The school has expanded its after-school partnerships and program offerings, and is developing an after-school parent council. Program activities include:
- Academic Tutoring/SES
- Capoiera
- Drumming
- Arts
- SWIRLS
- Basketball
- Chorus
- Animal Fun
