Louis Agassiz Elementary School
Principal's Vision
“My vision for the Agassiz is to create an educational community that helps students learn, be responsible, and become caring members of the community. PSS will help us join with the Agassiz Community Center to provide more hours of after-school academic and enrichment support to more students. PSS will help us provide effective, engaging programming for students and their parents in the areas of communication and relationship building
Overview
Located in Jamaica Plain, the Agassiz Elementary School is a large school serving over 600 students. The school’s student body is predominately Hispanic and low-income. The majority of Agassiz students are from immigrant families and speak Spanish as their first language. Many Agassiz families are unfamiliar with the cultural, linguistic, and academic norms that students are expected to adhere to at school, making it even more challenging for these students to succeed academically.
PSS will enable the school to build on their already strong relationship with the Agassiz Community Center (ACC). The school will work with the ACC and other partners to expand their after-school offerings and promote skill development involving communication and relationship building. Additionally, PSS aims to help the Agassiz address transportation barriers to participation.
Along with other Phase 2 PSS schools, the Agassiz will begin an intensive PSS planning process for the next school year in March 2007.
