Joseph J. Hurley Elementary School
Principal's Vision
“The mission of the Hurley School is to provide an equitable learning environment for the whole child, where every student thrives and excels, exhibits a passion for learning, and values cultural and linguistic diversity."
Overview
Located in Boston’s South End, the Hurley Elementary School is one of only three Spanish-English dual-language immersion schools in the city. The diverse student population includes about 300 students in grades K-5. Starting in 2007, the school will expand to include 6th through 8th grades. Students face numerous challenges to learning, many of which stem from situations outside of school.
Approximately one third of Hurley students are English Language Learners. One of the Hurley’s key strengths is its strong parent involvement. Neighborhood Parents for the Hurley School (NPHS) is a parent-run organization including 120 members.
While the school has implemented a number of in-school programs to address students’ socio-emotional needs and serve the whole child, more attention could be paid to these needs during the Hurley’s after-school program. PSS will support the Hurley in developing an after-school program that addresses students’ wellness needs, while extending and deepening students’ academic experience. Through PSS, the school will improve the coordination of in-school learning and supports, and ensure that after-school programming reinforces and enhances in-school activities.
The Hurley will begin an intensive PSS planning process for the 2007-08 school year in March 2007.
