Position Description

Primary Role:

The primary role of the Family Intervention Specialist is to assist DYS Casework Staff in identifying strategies for engaging clients’ families as an effective means of reducing recidivism for the youth, improving family relationships and educational, employment and treatment outcomes leading to successful discharge.

The Family Intervention Specialist will serve five District Offices and one Satellite Office within the Boston Metro Region.

The Family Intervention Specialist receives their job tasks and duties from the Community Clinical Coordinator in coordination with the Director of Community Services.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assist DYS Casework Staff in ensuring family engagement during community placement and, when appropriate, provide time specific, direct family contact for reducing revocation events.
• Assist DYS Caseworkers in effectively engaging families; provide feedback regarding their own observations in examining the family
• Assist DYS Caseworkers with development of skills and techniques they can adopt and incorporate when working with families
• Under the direction of the Community Clinical Coordinator, coordinating family intervention strategies ensuring continuity of clinical efforts with the client.
• Develop and maintain linkages with Massachusetts’ Behavioral Health Partnership’s (MBHP) managed care entities and family services providers within the Metro Boston Region.
• Interface with DYS Substance Abuse Services Specialist for case consultation and improved accessibility of Substance Abuse Services.
• Support DYS caseworkers who have clients receiving services under the Commonwealth’s Children’s behavioral Health Initiative.
• Participate in DYS Regional Team planning meetings
• Participate in each Community Supervision/Casework Team’s Weekly Meeting.
• Provide assistance to family members when determined to be appropriate by DYS Regional Team.
• Receive clinical guidance from the Community Clinical Coordinator (The Community Clinical Coordinator will meet regularly with the Family Intervention Specialist to ensure real time clinical consultative support)

Additional Qualifications:

• Master’s Degree (required) in Juvenile Justice, Child Welfare, Behavioral Health
• LMFT or LICSW strongly preferred
• Minimum five years professional experience in the fields of Juvenile Justice, Child Welfare, Behavioral Health or demonstrably related field
• Microsoft Office skills
• Must be able to handle multiple tasks and to meet deadlines in a timely fashion
• Must have a valid drivers license
• Must possess a vehicle
• Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Must possess strong organization and interpersonal skills
• Must be able to work independently
